dena Grid Study II

The dena Grid Study II aims to develop a long-term plan for the integration of renewable energies, and particularly wind energy, into the German power grid. For this, it is necessary to look relatively far into the future, as innovative technical solutions will be required for optimum integration. The emphasis of the study is on technical and organizational solutions which enable renewable energies to contribute 30% to the electricity generated, 20 GW of this from offshore wind. It will build upon the conclusions drawn in (the finalized) Part I, and therefore assumes that the grid enhancement and extension measures discussed in dena Grid Study I have been implemented.

The following aspects will be examined in detail in the study:

  • Flexible mechanisms for the generation of electricity
  • Forecast as to the quality of wind energy fed into the grid and of electricity consumption
  • Demand-side management
  • Provision of balancing and reserve power by wind turbines
  • The use of storage technologies
  • Comparison of suitable means of transporting wind-powered electricity to load centres inland
  • Reliability of electricity supply, even in difficult situations
  • The current capacity of overhead lines depending on the ambient temperature and wind speeds (temperature monitoring)

Important key players are involved in the dena Grid Study II via a project control group: the Zentralverband Elektrotechnik- und Elektronikindustrie (the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association ZVEI), VGB Power Tech, the Power Systems Association of the German Engineering Federation VDMA, the Association of German Network Operators, the German Electricity Association VDEW, Vattenfall Europe Transmission GmbH, Siemens AG, RWE Transportnetz Strom GmbH, the Offshore Wind Energy Forum and the foundation Stiftung Offshore-Windenergie, EWE Netz GmbH, EnBW Transportnetze AG, E.ON Netz GmbH, the Federal Wind Energy Association, BARD Engineering GmbH, the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU). The aim of the project control group is to ensure that the research results are accepted by as wide an audience as possible. It provides advice and makes decisions on fundamental questions regarding the content of the project, particularly where methodology and the input variables of the planned stages are concerned.

The dena Grid Study II will be financed in part by public and private project partners. The results are expected at the end of 2010.
