Several small offshore wind projects and some bigger projects have been carried out abroad in recent years. Initial experiences with offshore wind farms have been gained for facilities of up to 80 turbines, all of which have been installed relatively close to shore (no more than 15 kilometres away) in relatively shallow waters (up to about 12 meters). Almost all of these projects are located in the Baltic Sea.
This experience, gained primarily in Great Britain, Denmark and Sweden, is an important component in the use of offshore wind energy. Initial data important for future larger projects is now available on the dynamic loads and economic viability of turbines. But the experience gained in maintenance and the cost thereof is also valuable. Equally, planners and manufacturers can analyse the influence individual turbines have on each other (such as turbulence and the impact on yield), and their effect on the marine environment and bird migration.
