BeoFINO1
Joint project: Accompanying research on the ecological aspects of offshore wind on research platforms in the North and Baltic Seas
BeoFINO2
Long-term field research on research platforms in the North and Baltic Seas into the possible effects of offshore wind parks on the ecology of benthic organisms in the vicinity.
BeoFINO 1: 2001-2004
BeoFINO 2: 2005-2007
Registration of bird migration, benthos close to the piles (biocoenosis of flora and fauna on the bottom of the sea), the effect of electromagnetic fields on marine creatures, suggestions for environmental impact assessment procedures, research on measuring platforms.
The aim of the overall BeoFINO project was to determine the possible effects of future offshore wind turbines on the marine environment and to develop methods and criteria which make an appraisal of the danger to marine creatures and habitats possible.
Work Package 2 of BeoFINO 1, "Processes in the close vicinity of piles", focused on an analysis of successions on hard substrates and changes in epibenthic communities resulting from the construction and operation of a wind farm.
The sub-project “Effects of electromagnetic fields on marine organisms” (BeoFINO 1, Work Package 3) was directed at the numerous electricity cables in the watercourses of the North and Baltic Seas, operation of which can generate artificial fields in the vicinity. Apart from electric fields, which can be suitably insulated, organisms in the area are mainly likely to be affected by magnetic fields.
The range of a magnetic field with a flux density greater than the earth’s natural magnetic field of around 50 µT (microtesla) varies depending on the type of operation and construction and the strength of the current. Simple direct current conductors already exist which generate magnetic fields with flux densities of 3,200 µT in the immediate vicinity of a cable.
BeoFINO 2 built on the existing lines of research and developed them further, with the focus on the observation and evaluation of processes in the close vicinity of the piles over a long period. An examination was also made of the large-scale effects of alterations to the aeration of sediments resulting from the construction of wind turbines in the area where the North and Baltic Seas run together, and the corresponding sediment areas were studied.
