Short description:
The workshop highlighted the conflict between the regional economy, tourism and wind parks in the Baltic Sea. Opportunities for regional business and new approaches to tourism concepts were discussed with experts and consolidated. Basic issues related to wind energy at sea were also focused on. The aim of the workshop was to provide objective information and contribute to the development of solutions. (remark: Presentations are only available in German except where otherwise stated.)

5. Plenary discussion

The plenary discussion focused on the following issues:

• Offshore wind energy offers Mecklenburg-Vorpommern the prospect of access to a new technology, thereby creating jobs in companies throughout the value chain and putting the state in a positive light.
• The growing sensibility of the general public for the consequences of climate change has led to a shift in values. As awareness increases, the acceptance of offshore wind parks or alterations to what was until now unspoilt nature can also be expected to increase.
• The aspect of 'independence from energy imports' can be expected to gain in significance in the future. This and the fact that they are good for the climate is a further important argument for the development of renewable energies.
• Offshore wind energy could be followed by other projects. The coast and coastal waters can increasingly be seen as a location where businesses settle and industry develops. Offshore regional planning is of particular importance in light of the growing claims on its utilization.
• Until now, renewable energies have been seen in a positive light. Yet it is not automatic that offshore wind park projects enjoy a positive image. Proactive public relations such as on-site information stands are required. Offshore wind parks cannot be installed in the face of opposition from the regional tourism industry. Close cooperation is important here.
• The tourist associations on Rügen and in the Fischland-Darß-Zingst region will incorporate offshore wind energy positively into their tourism concepts. Tourists should be informed openly, honestly and in good time as to upcoming changes in the seascape.
• Both the price of holiday accommodation and occupancy have increased in Nysted despite the closeness of the wind park to the coast.
• The problems posed by lighting wind parks at night should be given more emphasis. The use of better lighting technologies could greatly reduce the annoyance this causes.
• The regional tourism industry sees the impact of a shipping accident as the greatest economic threat. The extremely heavy shipping traffic off the coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern means that an accident with toxic spills is already conceivable today. The threat of collision could be decreased dramatically in the narrow, heavily used Kadetrenden fairway if piloting were made compulsory. Effective plans on how to act in the event of a toxic spill should be drawn up and tested.
